Thomas Hutter, un agente immobiliare tedesco, parte per lavoro verso la Transilvania per incontrare il misterioso Conte Orlock, un vampiro centenario in cerca della sua amante, guarda caso proprio la moglie del malcapitato: Ellen. Il vampiro parte quindi verso la Germania portando con sé l'ombra della morte.
