It's not a secret that "Defunctland" is one of the best channels of its kind on YouTube, with series like "DefunctTV: Jim Henson" capable of thrill, excite and move thanks to the great skills of Kevin Perjurer and his staff to put together and convey stories normally unknown. After all, who would be wondering about the process behind all those wonders visiting Disneyland? With these premises, the news of a film produced by Defunctland could only be exciting. "Live From The Space Stage - A Halyx Story" is a docufilm that explores a topic quite unknown to the general public: a forgotten piece of history of the world of Disneyland and music that can not but intrigue fans of both, as well as those of Star Wars (despite being tecnically included in the first, by now). The film, narrated by the real protagonists of the events, explores the birth and demise of the rock band "Halyx", an artistic project born in 1981 for Disneyland Records, a sci-fi rock band that only performed one summer, in Disneyland.
With an awesome editing, as usual of Defunctland's products, it tells an exciting story that overwhelms the viewer: it's hard not to feel involved with what you see and hear. The director, Matthew Serrano, organizes the various interviews and narrations, mixing them with never seen before picture and concept arts and rare video tapes, so perfectly that they literally drag the viewer into that context, making him daydream about what was and what could have been.
A keyboardist dressed up us a robot, a drummer covered i rubber rings, a hooded amphibian jumping around while playing various instruments, a "wookie" on the guitar that throws it to the ground and continues to play, a guitarist overwhelmed by the letters of fangirls and a singer with great talent, a "punk Snow White"; these are the elements that make up the framework of a band that has left an indelible memory in the hearts of all the lucky spectators in the summer of 1981, mesmerized by their innovative style for the era of combining entertainment and music of high and professional level, innovative and bold, years before it was a common practice to fuse music and show (there were no Lady Gaga, Madonna ora Michael Jackson after all). A missed success, but a beautiful story to discover and capable of telling something worth not forgetting.
The film, which started filming in January 2019 and was completed after March 2020, was released on YouTube on August 20th for free on Defunctland's channel. I'd like to thank Kevin Perjurer, the producer, for making this "early review" possible. All the fans of rock, sci-fi and Disneyland are invited to watch the film, but be careful: if, at the end of it, I found myself so moved to clap my hands at pace with the music with wet eyes, I won't promise you'll not end up bursting into tears.
